Course Aims:

A clearly written document can facilitate important business decisions by being easy to read and understand. Our programme focuses on giving you the confidence and skills to write business documents in a clear manner using Plain English and avoid using technical or industry jargon.

Course Pre-requisites:

This programme is for anyone who has to write formal business documents, customer service letters, standard letters, brochures, reports and manuals.

Course Objectives:

On completion of this course delegates will be able to:

  • Use the spelling and grammar checkers effectively
  • Be confident about the commonest grammatical errors
  • Recognise clear writing and improve your own
  • Use SPACE rules for checking that your writing is professional

  • Setting objectives – what should happen as a result of this being read

  • Why it is important
  • What it is and what it is not – with real examples

Making it Readable

  • Language to avoid – and better alternatives
  • Practice in writing your own typical content in a plain English style
  • How style affects tone – and the impression readers gain of your organisation
  • Catering for readers in a hurry

The Spelling and Grammar Checkers

  • What they do well
  • How to avoid being duped
  • What you have to do yourself and how

Exercises

  • Recognising errors in grammar and style
  • Writing your own improved version

SPACE

  • Simple; positive; active; courteous and economical
  • A useful set of rules to use when checking your work for readability and tone
  • Techniques for checking thoroughly
  • House style and editorial conventions
